Exercise safety to avoid motorcycle accidents

Motorcycle safety important, motorcyclist killed

All motorists need to exercise caution to avoid motorcycle accidents.

A 20-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a Cape Coral crash last week when he was thrown from his motorcycle during a crash.

Miguel Gonzalez collided with an SUV at Chiquita Boulevard and Trafalgar Parkway on July 25. A Nissan Pathfinder was south on Chiquita Boulevard then made a left turn at Trafalgar Parkway. That’s when the crash happened. Gonzales went sliding through the intersection and was critically injured. He died later at Lee Memorial Hospital.

It’s the job of every motorist  — the motorcyclist and other motorists — to exercise safety. Motorists should be on the lookout for motorcycles. Here are some safety tips, according to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation:

  • Because of its narrow profile, a motorcycle can be easily hidden in a car’s blind spots or masked by objects or backgrounds outside a car. Take an extra moment to look for motorcycles, whether you’re changing lanes or turning at intersections.
  • Because of its small size, a motorcycle may look farther away than it is. It may also be difficult to judge a motorcycle’s speed. When checking traffic to turn, predict a motorcycle is closer than it looks.
  • Motorcyclists often slow by downshifting or merely rolling off the throttle, thus not activating the brake light. Allow more following distance. At intersections, predict a motorcyclist may slow down without visual warning.
  • When a motorcycle is in motion, see more than the motorcycle – see the person under the helmet, who could be your friend, neighbor, or relative.
